Intensive outpatient programs have been used for a wide range of problems, ranging from substance abuse to teen adjustment. The idea is to offer a condensed and more comprehensive initial approach to address problems more urgently.
Additionally, this approach allows for a much more thorough approach to assessment and intervention because of having a concentrated time together. Research consistently shows that significant psychotherapy results may be achieved in just the first session. Since this a one-day (6 hours) experience, I believe this finding may even be magnified.
Here is what you can expect:
- A thorough assessment of each partner's strengths and weaknesses based on the necessary elements outlined in the book, Shatterproof Your Marriage
- A thorough marital assessment, including some written inventories, also based on the book
- A diagnosis of the outward and the underlying forces that are maintaining the problems in your marriage and a complete collaborative treatment plan that targets them
- Specific problem areas will be broken down into workable units and you will learn how to turn these into achievable goals
- Relationship tools, particularly communication techniques, will be shared that will facilitate your negotiation of solutions
- You will finish the day with a written summary of the day and targeted recommendations to continue the pursuit of your goals
Obviously, I cannot guarantee your implementation of my recommendations, but I can guarantee this - your problems will be thoroughly assessed and identified, and a comprehensive treatment strategy will be provided. This plan will target your issues with proven therapeutic techniques. I integrate my advanced training in marital therapy with over 20 years of experience and the ideas outlined in my book. The primary situation for which I do not recommend this program is where one of the partners has a low commitment level to therapy itself. Then I recommend you come in for a conventional visit to discuss other approaches.
Sessions are available on Fridays and some weekdays (if scheduled enough in advance) and run from 8:30 - 3:30. There is a one hour lunch break and a 20 minute break in the morning and again in the afternoon. One 45-minute follow-up session is included. Insurance plans typically do not cover this program. However, conventional follow-up sessions are covered by insurance.
